Unfortunately, the bare minimum requirements are not always understand in the same way by all dog owners. So, I am writing this article with the intent to clear this all up.

I am sure that all dog owners can agree that dogs must be fed and most of them will also agree that some foods are better for their dogs than others. Likewise, most dog owners also agree that dogs need to be allowed to experience walks around the block or the park and that there is a need to play with them and pay them the attention they so often crave. The dispute arises when it comes to training as some owners believe it is utterly unnecessary while other think the opposite, that it is an unquestionable must.

I very passionately vote right along all those dog owners who believe that their dogs should be trained. My passion for training dogs is based on my observations that dog which are trained tend to:

- Better socialized and therefore also a better member of the family pack as well as being a better neighbor, etc.
- Better adjusted when it comes to being around other dogs.
- Happier because he or she is given more variety in their lives.
- Brighter because training forces them to use their brains with challenges which they would not need to face otherwise.
- Cuter for doing all kinds of adorable tricks.

In conclusion I will repeat myself – I am very passionate about dog training because I have little to no doubt that a dog which has been properly trained is much better balances, much more social which makes him or her more pleasant to be around, much happier and, lastly, much healthier.

Yes, dogs must be trained, in my humble opinion and such training can come from a variety of sources: professional dog trainers or dog owners who utilize the information gleaned from dog training books and/or videos which can readily be found through online vendors, retail stores or public libraries.

You need to be consistent and repetitive in teaching your dogs. Use the exact word or phrase each time you give a command.

A healthy and successful relationship with your dog starts with the establishment of your authority over him as his master. Be firm and strong when you deal with him, never harsh and violent. Once the dog understands this, he will seek to be a ‘good boy’ and obey commands promptly if he knows this pleases you.

Rubbing the dog?s belly is a good strategy in enforcing your authority. It teaches him submission by allowing him to lick the back of your hand. Never concede to his growling and whining just to keep him quiet. It is imperative that you establish habits that lead to good behavior the earlier the better.

An effective trick experts use is to allow the dog to learn by teaching himself. What do I mean? Let’s say, your dog is chewing on something he isn’t supposed to be chewing. You can scold him and take away the object immediately. This is a common canine training method. A better way is to take away bad behavior is through substituting it with a good one by giving unpleasant sensations with the incorrect behavior.

When the dog chews on a shoe, use a quick sharp squirt of a water gun to his face. If he resumes chewing, squirt him again. Now place one of his playthings in front of him. If he picks it up and plays with it, praise him enthusiastically. The dog will associate good feelings with playing with his toy and bad feelings when playing with the shoe.

Dog socialization in an important but often overlooked area of dog training. Developing social skills should start within three months of the puppy’s life. However, it would be good to have even older dogs socialize with people and other dogs regularly. Put socialization high up in the training priority list by introducing him to different kinds of people and animals (make sure they’re healthy) throughout his life.

As any parent would know, you discipline that which you love and care for. The dog training tips as outlined above will greatly help your dogs become the happier, best version of themselves. Nobody said it would be easy, but it will always be worth it.

Many dog trainers recommend this process to get your dog housebroken. Having a dog go to the bathroom in the house is not acceptable, so this is an easy way to train.

Dogs will naturally keep their home dry, it is a natural thing for them to do. Puppies and adult dogs will not soil their special home, thus making it easy to housebreak them.

Crates can be used to travel in, a place to put your dog if you have to leave for a couple of hours, or a place for an airplane ride. It is good to get your dog used to a crate so he can be put there on occasion.

If you feel a punishment is needed for a dog, do not put it in the crate. The dog needs to know that it is his safe place to be and not a bad place where he gets locked up.

This type of training will take a lot of patience and time. It can take days to weeks depending how your dog responds to the training.

When choosing a crate, their are lots of choices. The plastic ones are nice and usually have a locking door and a feeding dish. Fabric cages are pretty good but owners need to stay with their pet. Metal cages collapse making it easy to pack in a car, and does not take up much space. A dog needs to be able to turn around and stand up in the cage, to be the right size.

Toys and some food are a great way to get the puppy or dog interested in the crate. Training is simply done by luring the dog into the cage and providing food and water to encourage him to stay there. Put some food on the outside and slowly dribble it into the end of the cage. The dog will soon find out this is a great place to live.

Being sure there is fresh water daily is very important. A dog will whine until he gets used to his new home. Do not let him out when he whines but wait until he is done, so he learns whining is not okay.

It is important not to leave him in the crate too long. Puppies will need to go outside during the night. Do not crate a dog for more than four hours at a time. If a person is gone all day, make arrangements for your pet. He should not be crated all day and again at night.

Dogs crying at night is not uncommon, he is in a new place and needs to adjust. Puppies have to be taken out at night, and you will need to decide if a dog just wants out or has to go to the bathroom. Keeping the cage near you at night will help the dog to not feel so lonely.

Remember to take your pet outside after eating, the dog or puppy needs exercise on a regular basis so do not use the crate to contain him all day. It should be a good and happy place for short periods of time and a place to sleep at night.

Teething is also a common reason for dogs to start chewing. This is something he needs to do, but just teach him what he’s allowed to chew and what he isn’t. Praise him when he chews the right thing, and tell him a firm no if he starts chewing your shoes or the furniture!

This is just the start when it comes to taking control of your dog and stopping him from chewing. Just be consistent and patient and eventually he’ll understand what you want from him.
