Dog lovers know that dog training should be about building understanding and trust between dog and owner. There is no need to hurt your dog physically or mentally in order to get the dog to obey commands.

It is much better for you to train your dog yourself than to drop your dog off at a professional training site. Some trainers still use choke collars and other methods to frighten a dog into submission.

Forget about cruel methods when training your dog. The whole experience should be a delight for you and it should make your dog happier and more secure. After all, dogs thrive on pleasing their owners.

Dog training is an activity that you can work at together, so it will build a bond between you. In addition, if your dog is trained, it will have a happier life because it will not need to be locked in a cage or crate when guests arrive.

Nothing is worse than a dog that jumps up at the guests and tries to sit on their laps. Dogs should obey the command to sit, and should cease to bark when told to do so. Dogs crave to be taught obedience. This is because they will then have the security of knowing how to behave in different situations.

Training your dog also shows consideration toward your family. The dog is more likely to become a beloved family member if it is a pleasure to have around. Too many families drop their dogs off at dog shelters because of their pet’s bad behavior.

Do not let your pet become a hindrance and an embarrassment to others, including your family. Your pet can give a lifetime of joy if he or she is well trained. Teaching a dog manners takes time and dedication. Show your pet gently and quietly what your want it to do.

There are various methods for communicating instructions to a dog. The most common signals are hand and voice commands. If your puppy is very young, do not expect him or her to pay attention for very long. Two to three minute training sessions are long enough for small puppies.

You can do dog training with a puppy several times a day for very short periods rather than one long period that will frustrate both of you.

When holding a training session, take your dog to a part of the property, indoors or outdoors, where both of you will not be distracted. Remember that little puppies have limited attention spans and are easily distracted.

Have small, delectable treats on hand for your puppy so that you can reward him or her for obeying commands. Dog snacks from an online pet store are ideal. Let the puppy enjoy the treat before you continue the session.

Even better than treats to a dog is the heartfelt praise of his or her master or mistress. When a dog obeys a command to sit or stay, make the most of your puppy verbally or by patting. Treats and praise are a winning combination in dog training.

When planning to reward your dog with a treat, show it to the dog first. The dog will obviously want to grab it. You should give the command to “sit”, for example, repeatedly until the dog obeys. Then give the dog the treat immediately.

Never allow the dog to get away with disobedience. This is contrary to good dog training methods.
Dealing With Dog Aggression

Dealing With Dog Aggression

There is absolutely no doubt that Dog Aggression is an extremely worrying problem for thousands of Dog owners across the world.

The Facets Of Dog Aggression

Its important to differentiate between Dog on Dog aggression a and specific aggression towards people. Both are triggered for different reasons and with varying underlying rationale.

*Aggression Based On Fear: Once a Dog experiences an overwhelmingly traumatic experience, they can often react with aggressive behavior if ever put in a similar situation again. For example, if a Dog has been bitten by another Dog, they may become nervous around others and react with barking, chasing or other aggressive displays such as snarling or even biting.

*Dominance Based Aggression: This form of Dog aggression is centered on both people and other Dogs. It comes about when your Dog is attempting to be considered as the alpha leader. If your Dog is displaying aggressive behavior towards the owner when given instruction this is a sign that Dog Training is needed in order to re-establish yourself as the ‘alpha pack leader.’

What To Do If Your Dog Has Recently Become Aggressive

If your Dog has a history of friendliness towards strangers and family and has only recently begun to change its behavior. Efforts must be made to examine recent circumstances leading up to this change of attitude. Sometimes bad behavior can be a physical symptom of an emotional problem. Other times the reasons are medical based.

Emotion Based Dog Aggression

By ‘emotional reasons’ this is relating to any significant change of circumstance that may have considerably effected or upset your Dog. The classic example is when a new baby arrives in the family. Suddenly the Dog is no longer the centre of attention they once were and responds accordingly. As Pack animals Dogs may also presume that their importance in the Pack (the family) has suddenly diminished, so in order to regain your attention they may potentially display signs aggression is a misguided attempt to fall back into favour with you. In situations like these a combination of Home based retraining for the Dog and reward based incentives are effective to curb aggression.

Medical Illness Leading To Aggression

There are more than 50 Dog related illnesses and medical conditions which can appear as outward symptoms of aggressive behavior towards humans or other Dogs. You are no Doctor! So if your Dog has become aggressive and you really cant understand why, your first port of call should be to take them directly to a Vet for a professional opinion.

A dog owner would certainly be very proud at the accomplishment of training the pet to obey commands. After domestication, dogs became the wonderful companions and steadfast protectors of humans. Dogs have been domesticated but some individuals would ran the owners ragged with their unmanageable behaviors.

Any dog owner would be proud to have a pet that would move with alacrity and obey a given command. Dogs are one of the most valued animals because of the way they have gained access to the hearts of humans through their affectionate and loyal ways. Dogs have been domesticated but some individuals would ran the owners ragged with their unmanageable behaviors.

To have a manageable and obedient pets, it is imperative for dog owners to let the dogs undertake obedience trainings. Teaching the dog to lay down is very important given that most dog owners would want to take the pet everywhere they go. In spite of the fact that dogs are the most common choice for a pet, a large percentage of the populace are afraid of dogs. People are afraid of large and ferocious dogs. A dog that is down on its haunches would be less intimidating. A dog that was trained to lay down would be more manageable and would allow the owner to bring the dog anywhere without worrying that the dog would misbehave.

Lay down is one of the basic obedience commands that a dog has to learn. Teaching the dog to lay down would not be too difficult as similar to the sit command, laying down is already a natural behavior of dogs. A dog owner’s objective is to teach the dog to respond or to obey the lay down command. The rather difficult part of the training is getting the dog to assume the lay down position. Dogs are naturally playful and if the dog is guided into the lay position, the pet may think that you are teaching the dog another game.

The training would be easier if the dog already responds to the sit command. Training would be easier if treats are used as rewards and a location with less distraction is chosen. Get the dog’s attention and give the sit command. Reward the dog with the treat once it has obeyed the sit command. Move a hand holding a treat downwards until the hand is positioned on the floor between the front legs of the dog.

Being food motivated, the dog will lie down to get the treat. The instant the dog’s body touches the ground give the lay down command. “Lay down” or “down” are the common commands that must be consistently used. Lure the dog with treats and reward with praise to encourage the dog to obey the command. Short training sessions must be repeated several times a day until the dog obeys the command even without the promise of treats.

One of the biggest problems as an owner of black labradors is excessive barking.

One of the biggest problems as an owner of black Labradors is excessive barking.

If you want to solve this issue, however, it’s helpful to know why your dog is doing it to begin with.

Dogs can bark for all different reasons.

Quite a few dogs will bark if they are not receiving the attention they need. Dogs are social creatures and labrador retrievers especially love to please their owners. If they are not getting noticed, they will do what they can to change that. So how can you help? Give your dog lots of attention when he is behaving well. Play with him often and let him know how much you love him. When he barks, ignore him temporarily, and when he stops, return to giving him attention.

When some dogs get bored, they can bark excessively. How you can solve this problem is by keeping your dog entertained as much as possible by walking and playing with him, and making sure that he has plenty of toys to keep him busy.

When labrador retrievers sense threats to the safety of themselves or others. they will bark. Granted, nowadays, mail carriers are not necessarily considered threats, some dogs still will bark in this protective reflex. Stop this pattern by practicing waiting at the door with your dog, giving him lots of praise and treats when he is silent. As people walk past, make him sit and reward him. If he barks, correct him right away, let him settle, then give him praise.

Last, anxiety is another reason for problem barking. There are some dogs that have issues with anxiety. Finding out what the reasons are for the excessive worry and addressing them will help the barking in this case, and you may need the help of a dog behavior specialist to discover them.

It is often not necessary to use punitive measures to stop problem barking. Shock collars, sprays, and debarking surgery are all excessive and harmful methods that don’t manage the root cause of the barking behavior. Take the time to analyze what may be going on inside your puppy’s head, and you will end up with both happy humans and black labradors.

As the bark of the dog will alert the owner to potential dangerous situations, the dog must learn discriminatory barking.

Dogs being man’s best friends have not only offered companionship but protection as well. Dogs that are purposely developed for protection work are trained to discriminate dangerous situations and to bark to alert the master. Barking is a natural behavior of dogs thus it may be thought that a training that will hone the dog’s instinct to bark is no longer necessary. Never think that training the dog to bark would be a breeze as the training entails teaching the dog to bark only when it has perceived potentially dangerous people and situations. In short, the dog has to learn discriminatory barking as the barking will serve as a warning to the owners of possible territorial intrusion.

For a dog to be an effective watch dog, it has to learn to bark at situations that would need the master’s attention. This can be a tall order for a dog given the animal’s tendency to bark at anything. The slightest movement and sound will already make a dog bark. It is rather amusing to see dogs bark at the shadows of the leaves on the trees. Although difficult, it is possible to teach the dog to bark.

Many techniques all hyped to be effective can be used to train the dog but because of individual differences one dog may learn after two or four session and another dog may never learn at all. Positive reinforcement is proven effective in any kind of training. What you need to do is to curb the dog’s tendency to bark at anything. The dog must be made to bark thus you can leash the dog near the gate or fence.

Generally, dogs will bark at anyone that passes by so you will be given a chance to command the dog to stop barking. “No bark” or “Quiet” are effective command as long as they are given in a clear authoritative voice. Repeated training sessions will make the dog understand that barking at “harmless” people like postmen and delivery crews is not a done thing.

For the next level of training ask someone to forcefully enter the door. As the person approaches, give the dog the command to bark. Speak and Bark are some of the commands that can be used. You can praise or reward the dog with a treat as soon as it barks. Consistent training using the same command will eventually make the dog learn discriminatory barking. Always reward or praise the dog every time it obeys your command. Treats and rewards are positive reinforcements that will make the training easier as these will be associated by the to the compliance of the given command.

Potty training is expected to be a challenging task but a clever and resourceful pet owner can accomplish this task easily. The success of teaching the dog to do its business on the designated area largely depends on you more than on the dog.

House training, house breaking, potty training or toilet training refers to teaching the dog when and where to go to the bathroom or to the designated toilet area. In spite of the fact that dogs are well loved by all the members of the family, no one would want to clean the mess that the dog leaves everywhere. Potty training is expected to be a challenging task but a clever and resourceful pet owner can accomplish this task easily. The success of teaching the dog to do its business on the designated area largely depends on you more than on the dog.

When you take home a puppy from the breeder you have to be aware that your new pet has to undergo potty training. This task that will fall on your shoulders is best started while the dog is still a puppy. Any person that have had the opportunity of living in a home with dog will notice that these animals form habits.

Dogs that have soiled a particular area will return to the same place over and over again to defecate or urinate. Your task then is to prevent the dog from using the carpet as its bathroom and guiding the pet to the designated area. This task would be difficult for pet owners that are not at home most of the time. Being intelligent creatures, dogs will form the habit of defecating and urinating in the designated area in about a week.

All you have to do is choose a suitable place that will be the dog’s toilet. The dog can be trained to use the garage, the bathroom or a spot in the yard to be its potty area. Be aware that dogs need to relieve themselves after waking up, after eating and before going to bed at night. Dogs always want to please their owners and the praise will be an effective training tool. To prevent a still to be trained dog from having accidents inside the house, the owner has to be aware of the signs the dog is about to relieve itself.

Dogs make wonderful companions but these animals are entirely dependent on their owners. Along with the decision to take a dog for a pet comes the responsibility of making the dog a valuable member of the family

Puppies can get into mischief and that is why many dog owners choose to use crates to train them. The idea behind Crate Training Puppies has become increasingly popular as dog owners have seen the benefits to its use. The pros toward placing a dog in a cage while you are away or asleep, may have you deciding to buy a cage and try it for yourself.

Shopping for a cage can be confusing, that is because there are so many shapes and sizes to choose from. The best way to decide, is to think about your dog when it is full grown, will it be able to stand up when it is an adult dog? Cages can be small or extra large, depending on your pet.

Locating for a place for your cage to sit can be tricky. Some dog owners place the cage right by the front door of their home. When your dog is close to the door, it can keep it near you when you get home. That can make it convenient. Also the hallway could be a location that will not let you see the wires and bars of the cage when you are relaxing.

There are two things you can consider when picking the right location for the crate to be placed. You will want to consider how much room your home has and what room would suit it better. If the cage becomes an eye sore or something that you trip on when moving around, you could be tempted to stop the crate training. The next idea that is important is how much noise your pet makes. Some dogs will bark and make a lot of noise when their owners are away, if this particular noise is disturbing to neighbors, you may have to think about a more quiet location.

The first time you put your puppy in the cage, you could think about just using it for a short amount of time. That way your dog does not become stressed by being in a new place. It also helps to try the crate training while you are home and can check on it, that keeps the dog feeling happy. Some owners will place the dog in the cage and head out, leaving the dog worried about too many things at once.

If you are placing the dog in its cage overnight while you sleep, you could be in for some sleepless nights for the next few days. Most dogs will take a couple of days to get used to sleeping in the cage, while others take much longer. At night you could leave the crate where it is during the day, or you may move it in your bedroom, so the dog can still see you.

It can be difficult to hear your dog crying and barking when you try the crate for a few days. Just know that it is for your dog’s benefit and that your pet will get used to the crate. If you have the patience that may be needed to crate train, then you will see the advantages to using this type of training.

Crate Training Puppies, helps owners deal with dogs who may get into trouble when they are left alone. Without the crate, many dogs would destroy the house while the owners were not home, and that would lead to lots of frustration. To prevent any problems and to be proactive, keeping your dog in a cage during times when you cannot watch the dog, is an idea adopted by many animal owners.

Every dog owner would know the importance of walking the dog. Any breed of dog would need to be walked at least 20 to 30 minutes every day. Daily walks would not only ensure that the physical form of the dog is maintained but also guarantee that mental stability is attained to avoid the formation of behaviors that will make the dog an undesirable pet.

The need to train the dog to walk properly comes with the decision to take a dog for a pet. The dog must never be allowed to walk in front of the owner as this will reinforce the dog’s notion that it is the leader of the pack. The dog should benefit from the exercise but an owner of a dog that is hard to manage will have highly strung pet instead. For that reason, training the dog to walk on a leash is imperative. An owner that has properly trained the dog to walk on a leash will not be daunted by the task of walking the dog.

Dogs are intelligent animals but they should never be expected to come from the breeder already familiar with wearing a collar and being restricted by a leash. Just like any other kind of training it would be a good idea to familiarize the dog to a collar and a leash while it is still a puppy. Start the training by familiarizing the dog with the feel of a collar around its neck. Expect the pup to try to dislodge the collar but when the pet is already comfortable with the collar you can now introduce the leash.

Start a short training session by walking the leashed dog around the house. Take advantage of the dog’s tendency to follow you around. Dogs that have formed a strong bond with the master will always be eager to walk with its favorite person.

An interesting sound or an interesting scent will attract the dog to pull away from the leash. Stop walking. The dog has to understand that if it pulls on the leash the walking will instantly end. Continue walking, praise the dog and offer a treat if the dog settled down. The ideal way of walking a pet is to have the leash hanging loosely between the dog and the owner but this cannot be managed instantly. A pet owner has to be patient and persistent to be able to teach the dog to walk on a leash but it is certainly rewarding to have a well trained pet.

Dogs are naturally aggressive animals. Being pack animals, dogs have to be aggressive to be able to defend themselves against predators and to be able to hunt their prey. In the wild, dogs have to be aggressive to survive. Aggression was an advantageous behavior during the early existence of the dog but this behavior is now unacceptable to humans because it can have potentially serious consequences. It is therefore necessary to find ways to stop the dog’s aggressive behavior.

Dogs have always been man’s most loyal companions. These wonderful loyal companions are not only found in most homes but considered as family members as well. Dogs are wonderful companions but this cannot be said if the chosen pet is one that is difficult to manage because of an aggressive behavior. Dogs are well loved pets but due to aggression an owner may decide to put the dog to sleep especially if it has already caused serious injuries to the family members. The dog’s dreadful fate can be prevented if the owner would find ways to manage the dog’s aggression. To manage this concern, a dog owner has to find the reason for the pet’s aggressive behavior. To mete out harsh physical punishment to an aggressive dog that had caused a serious injury will never stop the dog’s aggression. Physical punishment may even worsen the dog’s aggression.

If a well behaved friendly pet has suddenly started growling, snapping and biting people a vet visit is necessary. There is a possibility that an underlying medical problem has caused the dog to develop an aggressive behavior. A dog in pain may snap and bite if touched. Neutering or spaying the dog can lessen its aggression as intact dogs are more dominant and territorial.

A situation in the environment can provoke a dog to be aggressive. Dogs are generally territorial and food motivated. Dogs that are not well socialized will react violently if a threat to its food or territory is perceived. The dog’s aggression can be minimized if the owner would avoid exposing the dog to the situations which will provoke its aggression.

Dog aggression is one of the common reasons why many dogs are put to sleep every year. Dog aggression is not impossible to correct but this is not an easy behavioral problem to manage either. The dog has to undergo socialization and obedience training to enhance its patience threshold. Dog aggression is one of the most difficult behavioral problems of dogs. A program that will modify the aggressive temperament of the dog can be created with the help of animal behaviorist and a professional dog trainer.

Dogs are the best friends and protectors of humans. These animals have made a great difference to the quality of people’s life. Dogs have offered humans comfort and affection. These animals that are known to be highly attuned to the feelings of humans have been the silent sounding boards for man’s woes and misfortunes. Dogs are tough and they have gained the reputation of being the defender of their people but such is not always the case. Dogs get stressed too and an owner has to do everything to calm the nervous dog.

Different situations in the environment can result to a circumstance where it is necessary to calm the pet. A dog exposed to a stressful situation may frantically bark, salivate excessively, tremble or whine pitifully. Other dogs would react to a stressful environment in a different way. The dog can be highly active and hard to control. New situations, unfamiliar faces and places as well as loud noises like the sound of rolling thunder and firecrackers would make a dog nervous.

Repeated exposure to these kind of situations will enhance the nervousness of the dog until it develops into a phobia. A dog that is always exposed to a stressful situation can be lethargic and can even lose weight. No dog owner would want to see a pet trembling in fear and no owner would want to constantly calm the pet. Owners have to find ways to calm the pet.

To prevent the dog from being stressed it would be best to know what activities or situations trigger a nervous “attack” so that the situation can be avoided. Avoiding stressful situations would not be always possible thus the best thing an owner can do is to find effective ways to calm the pet.

Dogs are affectionate animals that enjoy being petted. Pet owners use massage to calm the pet. Take away the nervous tension of the pet by running the hand in circular motion from the head to the rear end. Dogs are food motivated and frozen Kong toys are proven effective in distracting the dog’s attention from stress causing situations. Dogs are naturally energetic. Tired dogs are calm dogs thus an owner simply need to provide the dog with sufficient opportunities to exercise. Are you aware that a dog can be calmed simply by yawning? Dogs are calmed if humans are seen yawning.
