Small dogs are little canines usually with big personalities. However, they can also become big problems if you don’t train them the way you should. If you let them, they can develop what is called small dog syndrome.

It’s fairly easy to spot a dog that has this problem. They can be especially loud, overly protective, and extremely aggressive.

Because of their size, a small dog can cause trouble and get away with it much more easily than a large dog can. For one they aren’t nearly as loud when they bark, so they can get away with barking for longer, or they can be allowed to continue to bark because it can be ignored.

Besides the size, their cuteness also helps them get away with poor canine behavior. Because they are cute, small, affectionate and easy to pick up and hold, they often will be picked up when they do something wrong. These small canines often are babied because their owners see them as babies.

As you can see, it is easy to let a cute, cuddly, small dog act out of control. When a newcomer comes to the house it is easy to let them keep yapping away without correcting their behavior.

How a dog acts on your lap can tell if they have small dog syndrome. Nipping or barking at anyone that gets close to you may be seen as protective behavior, but in reality it is the dog’s way of saying that they own this human.

Why do they act this way? Is it because of their size? A dog acts like this because it is allowed to act like that. If it was trained not to and not allowed to continue the bad behavior it would no longer be acting like a tiny terror.

Fear not, this behavior isn’t permanent. Something can be done. With consistent discipline and training, you can turn your small dog into a well behaved and happier pet.
