Training your dog with the Invisible Fence
While the Invisible fence will allow your dog to roam your property and you won’t have to worry about them getting hit by a car by running out in traffic, you will have to take time to train your dog to learn where their boundaries are. This will take some time to do, but it will all be worth it.
Before putting the collar on the dog you will want to lay out the fence and get it buried. Once you bury the fence wire you will then want to put up the flags that are usually included in the kit. This way your dog will quickly learn where the fence is and will be able to know how far they can go.
After you have the fence buried and the flags up, test it yourself with the collar. Make sure that everything is working the way that it should before training your dog.
Put the collar on the dog and walk them along the property where the fence is. Ideally you want to stay a few feet away from the fence. When your dog gets close to the fence the collar should start to beep and your dog may pull back. This is normal, your dog is learning something new. You will want to do this many times till your dog understands that this is the boundary.
If your dog pulls and trys to go across the fence you will want to tug back on the leash and tell them with a firm no and correct them each time that they try to do that. Once of my dogs would totally try to ignore the shock and the beep of the fence but we spent more time training her and eventually she learned. The other dog learned after a few times around the fence, all dogs will learn differently.
Leave the flags up till your dog is comfortable with the beeping and the boundary. This may take several weeks. After you are comfortable with them knowing their boundaries you can take off the leash and while watching them make sure that they stay within the fence.
Gradually remove the flags slowly after weeks of them being off the leash. Once all the flags are gone they will usually not cross over as they will know their boundaries.
