High protein dog foods need to list meat as the first ingredient. Dogs can survive on a diet of either plant or animal origin as long as it is balanced and diverse. But to do more than merely survive dogs should have meat in their diets. There is a big difference between surviving, and thriving.

We who own dogs are truly dog lovers. We would like to get the ultimate dog food but there are times our budget will not allow this. You can try homemade dog food to get high protein in your dogs’ food and stay within your limits. But there are good high protein dog foods made that you can afford you might just have to look a little harder.

If you see grain as the protein that is listed first on the food label, do not buy it. Grains only have a minute amount of protein. This can cause your dog health problems such as dry skin, being overweight, low energy, no way to fight infections, and brittle hair.

If fish or meat is listed first on a high protein dog food label it would mean that the food is of high quality. It will also cost more. But it might save on vet visits later if that is what your dog needs. If you are going to make a high protein homemade dog food you can add these things as necessary.

It was once thought that high protein levels in dogs caused kidney failure. This is simply not true. The tests done to rationalize this theory were not even done on dogs, they were done on rats. So if you are thinking that your dog may suffer as a result of a high protein dog food think again.

You can read article after article about the different kinds of protein and what your dog may produce on its’ own. They will get into amino acids and the balance that determines the bio-nutritive value. But all you have to do if you are worried about a high protein dog food is ask your vet.

Unless you plan on becoming a vet yourself all you need to know is what is best for your dog. A diet that uses a high protein dog food is never bad unless the protein comes from the wrong source.
