Training Tips for your Puppy
Every dog should know how to walk on a leash without pulling and making your walk miserable. For safety reasons, they need to know how to stay, sit, and Come. Here is how you can train your dog on these things.
Making your dog Understand NO
For the safety of your dog, just like a small child, your dog should understand the word NO! When you say the word NO your dog should stop and stand still. This can be achieved by walking them and saying the word NO when they start to pull, or when they start to growl. When you say the word NO say it loud and in a firm voice, while pulling the leash tighter. At the same time stop, and make him stop each time you say it. Soon your dog will stop each time you say NO.
Walking on a leash
Walking your dog is great exercise for both you and your dog. but sometimes the dog makes your walk a nightmare. To teach your dog to walk with you on a leash, start by walking him and getting him a little tired. Then with your choker chain on him, every time he pulls, tug sharply on the leash to pull him back in line. Say NO in a authoritative voice so that he knows this is unacceptable behavior. Do this every time he pulls. Soon he will be walking and stopping when you are. When is he walking nicely, do not tug on the leash, relax and enjoy the walk, but make sure he knows that you are the one in control and he is obeying you.
Sit
Teaching your dog to sit can take some time. While walking stop, tell him to Sit, if he doesn’t gently push down on his hind quarters so that he is forced in a sitting position. Let him stay there a few minutes, then go back to walking a few steps, and again stop and tell him to sit. If he still doesn’t sit, repeat the previous step by pushing down on his hind quarters. After a few times he will realize that when you stop walking, he is expected to stop and sit.
Once you are home and he is off the leash tell him to sit. He should sit, if he doesn’t you will need to repeat the steps to make him sit.
Stay
Stay is an important command, this could keep him from danger, or allow you to safely do something that would be dangerous for him. To teach them to stay, make them sit, then tell them to stay, point your finger towards the floor so that they know the position that they are suppose to stay in, and walk a few steps away from them if they move, take him back to the spot that he started out in, and again tell them to sit, then stay.
Come
Getting your dog to come to you on command is another lesson that you will want to teach your dog. When he may run away from you, making him come to you can save his life, and keep him out of danger. After you teach him to sit and stay, you want to teach him to come to you by calling his name.
After he learned the stay command, start teaching him the come command. He should be able to come to you every time you call his name.
Staying in the yard
The easiest way to keep your dog in the yard is to install invisible fencing and keep him in the area that you want. This way there is never any chance of him seeing something across the road and darting out into traffic.
Barking Control
There is nothing more annoying that a dog barking at nothing. Neighbors will start complain in the middle of the nights if your dog barks all night long. One of the best ways to control unwanted barking a collar designed to give them a little shock when they bark. You don’t need to leave the collar on all the time, just the times that they are barking unnecessarily.
How long will this take?
Depending on your dog and his temperament it can vary. Some dogs are quick learners, some are more stubborn, You will have to have patience and the time to keep going over these commands till your dog understands and follows them. But in the long run it will be worth it.
