The Dog is a Digger

My dog has a habit of burying things. It’s not that we don’t give her enough food but if she doesn’t like what we give her she will bury it. She will bury things inside or carry it outside to dig and bury it.  She enjoys burying things and loves to just dig holes for the fun of it. While she may enjoy it this habit makes it dangerous for us and guests of ours to walk through the yard after dark without breaking an ankle.

Why do dogs dig? Sometimes they dig holes because they are bored, or trying to escape out of a fence. Sometimes they just are natural diggers and enjoy it.  Maybe they hear something that lives under ground that humans can’t hear and are digging to get to it, we may never know.

To stop a dog from digging you want to be consistent and tell them no in a firm voice every time they start to dig and you catch them.  Giving them toys to play with will keep them busy and keep them occupied so that they will have something to do other than dig in your yard or newly planted flowerbed.  If your dog digs only when there is no one around you may want to keep them in a crate for awhile till they are used to not digging.  Sometimes you can get commercial products at the pet store that will help your dog not to dig.

Making sure that your pet has enough exercise will help keep them happy and give them the stress relief that they need and may exhaust them so that they won’t want to dig.
