How to Housebreak your Puppy

There is nothing worse then walking across your carpet and finding a “wet spot” from your dog. It not only ruins your day, it also will ruin carpets, and seep down into the flooring under the carpet and the padding. You want to housebreak your dog as soon as you can after bringing  them home.

So how can you make your cute dog a housebroken dog?

There are several good tips that you can do to train your dog to be housebroken. Mostly you will have to watch your dog and learn when they will need to go outside to go potty. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. You just need to realize when after they are finished eating they will need to go.

The Steps to house breaking your dog:

  1. Usually withing 15-20 minutes after feeding they will need to go out. Not all dogs are on this type of schedule so you will need to time your pet. They are usually pretty consistent about this. So once you learn you will be able to take your dog out and prevent accidents.
  2. If your dog usually has accidents when you are away you may want to keep them in a crate till they are more mature and have better bladder control.
  3. Take your dog out for frequent walks in the beginning when you first get them. This way they will know that it’s not acceptable to go potty in the house.
  4. Praise the dog when you take him out and he does his business outside. This will let them know that you are pleased with them and will make them happy. They do like to please you.  Giving your dog positive reinforcement will make him learn quicker.
  5. If you have a crate for your dog, as soon as you take him out of the crate take him right to the door and go outside. After all he has been confined he will soon learn that his reward will be going outside.
  6. Take them to the same location each time you take them out so they know what they are suspose to do when they go outside.
  7. When you first bring your new puppy home you will want to take them outside every 4 hours or so. They are unable to hold it much longer than that. Always praise them when they go outside and not in the house.

Some things that will confuse the dog.

Newspapers on the floor. It’s just easier to get them outside than it is to clean up the newspapers.

Not being on a schedule. If you come home and let them out of their cage, and don’t take them outside right away they may have more accidents.

Not keeping the dog on a feeding schedule or changing their food while trying to house break them.  Don’t leave food available for them while trying to train them. Once they are house broken and will let you know when they need to go out, it is fine to leave food for them, till then you want them on a schedule. Giving them different foods while trying to housebreak them will also give them diarrhea, or other problems that will make it more difficult to train them. Try to keep things consistent when training them.
