Even if it is difficult for you to think that dog biting behavior is comparable to the behavior of human’s, it is an accurate statement. If you get angry or frustrated, you yell or may even show signs of inappropriate behaviors. While your dog can not yell, they can show their aggression by biting. Unfortunately, if these bad behaviors are not stopped, it could lead to serious injuries or, worse, your dog could have to be euthanized.

The first thing you must realize with dog biting behavior is that there are generally three different types of aggression with dogs. The first reason for their aggression is dominance or control. They want to be the alpha dog and this behavior needs to be stopped immediately. The best way to handle this is to enforce rules in the house without using a physical punishment, show them you are in control by eating first, and always be the first one out the door or in the house. This will show them that you rank higher than they do and put an end to their fight for top rank.

The second type of aggression is territorial aggression and your dog may not necessarily show this behavior toward you, but instead, show it toward anyone else that comes near you and the home. This must be stopped at a young age and can be done by introducing your dog to a lot of strangers early on in life. Once you prove to them that strangers are not going to harm you or them, their aggression should slowly disappear.

Last is the aggressive behavior about their possessions. Also known as food aggression, it can be dealt with by hand feeding your dog. Take the food dish away and hand feed your dog for a few weeks. This will let them know you have no interest in taking food away, but only it giving them food. After a few weeks, you can then bring back the dish and start dropping two or three pieces into it. Eventually, their behavior will change and they will want you to come near their food, knowing that you will not be taking it, but instead, will be giving them more.

Dog biting behavior can be very stressful on the dog and the owner. The most important thing you can do is learn to control their aggressive behavior early on. However, if your dog is grown, you can still teach them better behavior, but it may take a little more time.
